Applying Markforged Technology to Cut Lead Times and Drastically Reduce Tooling Spend

Siemens Energy, a global energy technology company, faced a challenge in its Technology Applications Center. Their process for testing gas turbine vanes relied on expensive, slow-to-machine metal fixtures with costly silicone gaskets. While they had begun 3D printing replacement fixtures with Markforged printers and materials, they lacked confidence in the structural simulation, often overusing carbon fiber reinforcement. This led to unnecessarily long print times and wasted material.

By implementing Markforged's Simulation software within the Eiger workflow, the Siemens Energy team could virtually test and optimize their part designs. Markforged's solution provided the confidence to use the optimal amount of continuous carbon fiber, reducing its use by up to 60% and cutting print times by up to 75%. This resulted in fixtures that were produced faster and more cost-effectively while still securely holding the valuable turbine vanes during high-temperature testing.
