AppSumo, a newsletter that promotes digital products to entrepreneurs, wanted to sell a higher-priced online course (Monthly1K.com, about $300). Because many visitors weren’t ready to buy on their first visit, the team needed a way to re-engage interested prospects and turn consideration into purchases.
Noah Kagan launched simple retargeting — a single targeting list with ads on the open web and Facebook — then expanded ad units and offers while testing. The program improved productivity, maxed out impressions on high-performing lists, found Facebook sidebar and multiple-size open-web ads worked best, and drove strong returns (return on spend climbed to 2–5x on some campaigns, with an overall 67% ROAS).
