American Apparel, a maker of sweatshop‑free basics with 320 retail stores and 12 online shops, wanted to improve Facebook advertising but had previously abandoned it because they couldn’t track purchases. Although display retargeting had shown promise, the marketing team worried retargeting might simply cannibalize conversions from other channels rather than drive new revenue.
They tested Marin Display’s Facebook retargeting, using its conversion tracking, advanced targeting and API to tailor messages to different audiences. The campaign delivered a 20x return on ad spend and produced no dip in conversions from other sources, indicating the gains were incremental revenue rather than diverted sales.
