Operation Bird’s Eye Mapware Leverages UAV Technology for Public Safety Operations in Sandwich

Operation Bird’s Eye partnered with Mapware in August 2019 to test how drone technology could support public safety operations along the Cape Cod shoreline in Sandwich, MA. The multi-agency effort needed better tools for search and rescue, shark monitoring, coastal mapping, traffic monitoring, and fast incident response, especially in a region with recent shark sightings and challenging waterways.

Mapware deployed multiple UAVs and a flight team to provide real-time video, aerial mapping, and rapid response support during planned exercises and an unexpected fuel spill. The results showed that Mapware’s drone operations could locate people in the water faster, support delivery of flotation and medical supplies, improve shoreline and marshland mapping, monitor traffic choke points, and give responders clearer situational awareness of spill spread and surface activity.
