Derbyshire County Tracks Gritting Routes and Snow Removal Map

Derbyshire County Council, which manages a dozen public-facing LeafletJS web map applications for residents and stakeholders, wanted better insight into how people were using its maps. With Google Analytics showing traffic but not actual map interaction, the council needed a clearer picture of demand for its gritting routes and snow removal map to decide whether a redevelopment was worthwhile.

Using Maptiks for web map analytics, Derbyshire County Council tracked visitors, map usage, bounce rates, and other engagement metrics. Maptiks revealed that users interacted with the map an average of 11 times per session, with a 37% overall bounce rate; mobile users were more engaged than desktop users, at 32% versus 50% bounce rate. Based on these results, the council decided to revamp its web maps and focus on mobile users, while also reporting key engagement metrics to management.
