University of Waterloo - Customer Case Study

The University of Waterloo’s Submarine Racing Team, WatSub, wanted a way to improve and optimize its human-powered submarine design so it could create the fastest vehicle possible. To support this challenge, the team worked with Maplesoft using Maple and MapleSim for calculations and simulation-based design analysis.

Maplesoft helped WatSub analyze undefined variables in the gearbox structure, optimize propeller components, and improve the submarine’s transmission. As a result, the team developed a well-functioning submarine, launched its first boat, Amy, in July 2016, and placed 11th overall out of about 135 teams at the European International Submarine Races. With more than 130 members and a second submarine, Bolt, already launched for the 2017 season, WatSub continues to refine its designs with Maplesoft’s tools.
