Ulysse Nardin, a Swiss watch manufacturer, faced the challenge of increasing the power reserve, or running time, of its watches. The company sought to maximize the energy storage density within the limited volume of a watch barrel by developing a new barrel spring made from advanced composite materials. To meet this challenge, they utilized Maplesoft's Maple software for modeling and optimization.
Using Maple, an engineering consultant developed a tool to model and optimize barrel springs made of silicon-diamond composites. This solution allowed Ulysse Nardin to design springs with complex geometries and varying thickness to transmit constant torque. The implementation by Maplesoft resulted in a spring with far superior stiffness and stored energy capacity compared to steel, effectively doubling the potential power reserve of the watches.
