Stanford’s School of Engineering helps make cataract lenses affordable with Maplesoft, cutting $100 eye care lenses to a fraction of the cost

The customer, Stanford’s School of Engineering, faced a challenge in designing an affordable intraocular lens for cataract surgery in the developing world. An alumnus, Joel Segre, created prototypes that produced a problematic light haze, and he could not identify the source of the optical error. He sought help from a physicist who used Maplesoft's Maple software to address the issue.

The solution involved using Maplesoft's Maple to build a custom ray-tracing program that modeled the lenses. This allowed the team to quickly identify and correct the sub-micron variations causing the haze. As a result, the lenses now produce crystal clear images, which will enable higher visual acuity for patients and help make vision care affordable for billions of people.
