Sheffield University Team Uses Maple and MapleSim to Design Miniature Locomotive

The University of Sheffield’s Railway Challenge team needed a tool to assist in the design and optimization of their miniature locomotive for an annual engineering competition. To meet this challenge, they adopted Maplesoft’s products, Maple and MapleSim.

By using Maplesoft’s Maple and MapleSim, the team created detailed physics-based and dynamic models to virtually test systems like regenerative braking and suspension. This solution saved significant time and money, allowed for component optimization, and helped the team progress from a non-functional locomotive to achieving as high as a fourth-place finish in the competition.
