Saving Development Costs with Digital Twins - Motor Sizing for a New Filling Machine

Stoppil Industrie, a manufacturer of filling, dosing, screwing, and labeling machines for the food, chemical, cosmetic, and detergent industries, was developing a new EB7000 screwing machine and needed to validate whether its selected brushless DC motor could handle the loads in the machine’s duty cycle. Concerned the motor might be undersized, Stoppil turned to Maplesoft and its MapleSim system-level modeling software to avoid the time and cost of building a physical prototype.

Maplesoft created a physics-based digital twin of the EB7000 using Stoppil’s CAD and technical data to simulate machine dynamics and motor requirements across the full duty cycle. The results showed the original motor was undersized by a factor of ten, allowing Stoppil to select the correct motor, avoid a failed prototype, and achieve its target throughput of 40 units per minute.
