Renault uses Maplesoft to predict engine seizure and avoid €1–2 million prototype costs

Renault's Mechanical Engineering Department faced the challenge of predicting and preventing engine seizure in their prototypes, a failure that could cause significant delays and additional costs estimated between 1 and 2 million euros per occurrence. To address this complex thermal and lubrication issue, they turned to Maplesoft and utilized their Maple mathematics software to develop a predictive model.

Using Maple, Renault developed a parameterized 0D-1D model that describes the physical behavior of a lubricated mechanical system to predict the risk of seizure. This solution from Maplesoft allowed for rapid iterations, sensitivity analyses, and the creation of detailed mappings of seizure behavior. The implementation enabled Renault to generate relevant technical recommendations very quickly, avoiding the substantial costs and project delays associated with prototype failure.
