Northern Virginia Community College professor Matthew Westerhoff wanted a way to improve his students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and prevent them from feeling overwhelmed by difficult calculations. To address this challenge, he turned to Maplesoft’s Maple software for use in courses such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

Maplesoft helped Westerhoff create a more efficient learning environment by having students use Maple to solve problems, visualize concepts, and build proficiency with computational tools. The result was stronger conceptual understanding and better performance: courses using Maple saw significantly higher average course grades and final exam grades, and students also gained experience with software they can use in further study and industry.
