Nortel, a leading telecoms manufacturer, faced the challenge of modeling how the introduction of higher bandwidth ISDN services would impact the capacity and grade of service (GOS) on their existing radio systems, which were originally designed for voice-only PSTN traffic. They engaged Maplesoft and used its Maple symbolic computation software to develop a universal analytic blocking model that could accurately predict system performance under mixed traffic conditions.

Using Maple, Nortel developed a symbolic multi-dimensional Markov finite state model that could quantify both 'hard' and 'soft' blocking, a complication where calls are refused despite available capacity due to system constraints. The Maplesoft solution provided accurate results within seconds, a significant improvement over traditional Monte-Carlo simulation methods. This allowed Nortel to optimize system capacity planning for their customers, ensuring a good GOS for all users while maximizing revenue.
