Ford Motor Company pinpoints 1800–1900 Hz chain noise with Maplesoft

Ford Motor Company faced a challenge with severe noise and vibration in a new transmission prototype, where chain drive sound pressure levels were 10-15 dB over nominal values. To understand the source of the noise and develop predictive design tools, Ford engineers utilized Maplesoft's mathematical software, Maple.

Using Maple's symbolic and numeric math solvers, the Ford team developed analytical models to predict chain drive system resonances. The solution enabled them to accurately identify the problematic noise source and validate their predictions against experimental data. As a result, Maplesoft provided Ford with a powerful predictive design tool, allowing other technical staff to easily perform future resonance predictions.
