A Maplesoft Case Study
EMAK, an Italian manufacturer of garden machinery like chainsaws and brush cutters, faced a significant challenge due to new anti-pollution legislation (EPA and EURO standards). The company needed to redesign its two-stroke, single-cylinder engines to be cleaner and more efficient, requiring substantial research investment to reduce polluting emissions. To meet this challenge, EMAK employed Maplesoft's Maple software as a simulation tool to predict engine performance and emissions.
Using Maple, Maplesoft's solution enabled EMAK to develop a one-dimensional code for simulating engine parameters such as pressure, temperature, and outflow. This allowed engineers to mathematically model physical phenomena and drastically reduce development time spent on trials and fine-tuning. The solution achieved high computational accuracy, with an average error of 7% compared to experimental data, and provided clear graphical interfaces for interpreting results. Maplesoft's tools helped EMAK optimize engine design for increased efficiency and improved time-to-market.
