A Mapillary Case Study
The World Bank supported a pilot to help the Laos Department of Transport, which lacked a complete map of its national road network beyond national and provincial roads and had no modern system for road condition monitoring. The pilot used Mapillary imagery together with OpenStreetMap (OSM) and QGIS, collecting visual data with Android devices mounted on car windscreens to address mapping gaps in a resource‑scarce environment.
Mapillary’s street‑level imagery was integrated into OSM and QGIS to create a practical workflow for road inventory development and updating; images captured from Android devices mounted on cars provided the visual evidence for asset mapping and condition assessment. As a result, Mapillary enabled the creation of an updatable road inventory and a foundation for ongoing road condition monitoring where none existed before, improving mapping coverage and data availability for The World Bank’s infrastructure work in Laos.
