Case Study: OpenStreetMap achieves richer, more accurate maps by supplementing satellite imagery with Mapillary

A Mapillary Case Study

Supplement satellite imagery with views from the ground

OpenStreetMap needed to supplement satellite imagery with ground-level views to improve the accuracy and detail of map edits. Mapillary provides ground-level imagery and derived data, integrated into OpenStreetMap editing workflows via the JOSM and iD editors.

Mapillary imagery and data are available directly inside JOSM and the iD editor, enabling the OpenStreetMap community to use street-level photos as references when adding attributes for roads, buildings, amenities, parks, traffic signs, and more. This Mapillary integration has streamlined contributor workflows and increased the detail and reliability of OpenStreetMap edits by giving mappers verifiable ground-level evidence for features and tags.
