Case Study: Red Cross achieves rapid post-disaster imagery and mapping for emergency response with Mapillary

A Mapillary Case Study

Preview of the Red Cross Case Study

How Red Cross Uses Data During Global Disasters

The Red Cross faced the challenge of creating fresh, street-level imagery and up-to-date maps immediately after disasters to support rapid emergency response. Mapillary partnered with the Red Cross (alongside Humanitarian OpenStreetMap and Doctors Without Borders on the Missing Maps initiative) to capture post-catastrophe imagery, with Red Cross teams using Garmin VIRB cameras mounted on vehicles to collect data in the field.

Mapillary's imagery-capture efforts in Haiti, West Africa, Bangladesh and Dominica (after Hurricane Maria) provided timely visual data that the Red Cross used to assess damage and prioritize aid delivery. By supplying comprehensive, on-the-ground imagery, Mapillary improved mapping coverage and situational awareness for responders, enabling faster, more informed decisions during relief operations.
