District of Columbia Department of Public Works - Customer Case Study

The District of Columbia Department of Public Works (DCDPW) needed a way to document and coordinate autumn leaf collection across 2,200 streets, more than 100 vehicles and some 300 employees while increasing transparency and reducing public help-desk inquiries. To capture location-based, time-stamped proof of completed work and show changes over time, DCDPW partnered with Mapillary and its street-level imagery tools.

Mapillary ran a pilot on 10 leaf-collection vehicles using customized dashcams and Android phones with the Mapillary app, coordinated via Capture Projects and integrated into ArcGIS. The program produced nearly one million georeferenced, time-stamped images in the 2018–2019 season, required little extra staff training or effort, provided verifiable proof of service at specific places and times, and enabled faster responses to management, city council and the public while improving collection planning.
