A Mapillary Case Study
The Connecticut Department of Transportation faced high costs, limited access, and slow turnaround when relying on its in‑house photolog vans for geotagged street‑level imagery. To get low‑cost, fast, and more widely accessible imagery for field data collection, the Department adopted Mapillary and its mobile app to capture and host unlimited location‑based images.
Using Mapillary, crews mounted Samsung Galaxy S7 phones (and later Garmin VIRB 360 cameras), captured imagery in the field, and uploaded it daily to the Mapillary platform; Connecticut DOT has uploaded 3.1 million images covering nearly 14,500 miles and is one of five DOTs contributing to a combined 40 million images on Mapillary. Mapillary’s API was integrated into a UConn road safety analysis tool, the imagery is available to partners for collaboration, and the platform now supports QA and streamlined, data‑driven workflows across the Department.
