Completing the Map for Bicycle Advocacy in Ottawa

BikeOttawa, a long-standing community cycling centre working to make roads safer for cyclists, partnered with Mapillary to gather street-level data. Using smartphones and action cameras mounted on bicycles, they set out to capture systematic imagery to support bike advocacy and safety planning.

Mapillary’s platform enabled BikeOttawa to collect 450,000 images across 2,000 km in just over a month; that imagery is now being used to identify where infrastructure is needed or requires maintenance, to build a traffic-stress model, and to monitor changes over time—providing concrete, measurable evidence to support safer cycling through Mapillary’s mapping tools.
