A Mapillary Case Study
The City of Clovis, NM faced a first-ever, city-wide traffic sign inventory with a one-person GIS department and no existing records—information lived in the head of a retiring employee. Hiring a contractor at $4–6 per sign was outside the budget, so GIS Specialist Steven Hewett evaluated and adopted the Mapillary platform to cost-effectively capture street-level imagery and sign data himself.
Using three action cameras, Hewett collected some 277,000 images across nearly 1,300 miles of streets and uploaded them to Mapillary; Mapillary’s computer vision automatically identified about 5,000 traffic signs. The solution let Clovis geolocate signs, check visibility and condition, and maintain up-to-date data via a Mapillary for Organizations subscription—cutting what would have been years of manual work down to months (or days with focused effort) and avoiding large contractor costs.
