Yahoo! Japan cuts map operations to zero with Mapbox

Yahoo! JAPAN Weather & Disaster, a service of a major Japanese internet provider, faced high operational costs and unstable performance from its on-premise map tile servers. Their challenge also included a cumbersome, Excel-based map styling process managed by an internal team, which was slow to adapt to new requests and hindered app development. They turned to vendor Mapbox and its Mapbox Tiling Service (MTS) for a solution.

Mapbox implemented its MTS to replace the costly in-house servers, slashing infrastructure maintenance costs to zero. The solution also included Mapbox Studio, which made map design intuitive and efficient. The migration resulted in improved map stability, especially during traffic spikes, and provided the flexibility of vector data for more dynamic visualizations, allowing the team to focus on enhancing their app services.
