A Mapbox Case Study
USA Today, one of America's most circulated news sources reaching about 3 million daily readers, faced the challenge of turning massive, complex datasets into engaging, accessible reporting that makes each reader feel “in the center” of the story. The newsroom needed visual tools to tell national-scale stories — from every mile of the U.S.–Mexico border to neighborhood-level foreclosure data, mass-shooting timelines, and storm tracking — in a way that drives engagement and public attention.
Using colorful, interactive, Mapbox-powered maps and visual storytelling, USA Today produced features like The Wall (a mile-by-mile visualization of the border), a ZIP-code searchable mortgage foreclosure analysis, an interactive storm tracker, and mass-shooting timelines. Those projects boosted reader engagement, earned The Wall a Pulitzer Prize, drew Congressional attention to reverse-mortgage abuses, and helped USA Today move issues into the national conversation.
