UNEP-WCMC’s Protected Planet team set out to modernize the World Database on Protected Areas so users could more quickly find and explore protected sites. Developers and designers faced the challenge of refreshing the site’s home and map interface to deliver a faster, more intuitive experience for researchers, policymakers, and the public.

The team implemented a redesigned front end with Mapbox powering the geospatial experience, resulting in snappier map performance, clearer navigation, and an improved discovery flow for protected areas. The update made it easier for users to browse and interact with the database, enhancing access to conservation data.
