UN OCHA - Customer Case Study

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ Centre for Humanitarian Data helps humanitarian actors get the data they need to make timely, responsible decisions. During COVID‑19 the Centre faced the challenge of rapidly synthesizing diverse, frequently updated datasets—case counts, refugee and IDP populations, market prices, vaccination campaigns and funding—across national and subnational boundaries for countries already in long‑term crises.

To meet that need OCHA built the COVID‑19 Map Explorer, an interactive map (powered by Mapbox/OpenStreetMap) that pulls approved boundary data and numerous indicators via GitHub-driven updates and efficient client‑side joins. The result is a clear, accessible tool used by humanitarian decision makers and the public to track impacts—across 54 countries, 16 sectors and thousands of organizations—informing responses to disrupted vaccination campaigns, funding shortfalls and other pandemic‑related needs.
