Ookla, the company behind Speedtest®, collects more than 10 million consumer-initiated speed tests daily and hundreds of millions of mobile network scans to measure global internet and cellular performance. Their challenge was presenting that massive, location-based dataset in a clear, up-to-date way—showing 5G rollouts, coverage types, and regional performance—to operators, governments, enterprises, NGOs and the public.

Ookla uses Mapbox (and MTS for tiling infrastructure) to power interactive maps like the weekly-updated Ookla 5G Map and the open Ookla for Good datasets. The solution visualizes billions of data points at scale, speeds delivery of public datasets, and gives partners and policymakers the location context they need to improve connectivity, accessibility and network decision-making.
