Helium is a blockchain-based wireless network that lets anyone deploy “hotspots” to create decentralized connectivity for low-bandwidth IoT devices and earn HNT cryptocurrency. Because Helium’s growth depends on community members choosing optimal hotspot locations, users needed a highly transparent, scalable mapping experience to research placements, understand connectivity and earnings, and guide network expansion.

Mapbox provided the mapping platform — using vector tiles and map loads to visualize hotspots, connections, earnings and validators — and partnered with Helium to predict usage and iterate on the explorer. The result is a responsive, scalable network map that helps users find the best hotspot locations, improves transparency and UX, and supports ongoing growth and reward optimization across Helium’s decentralized network.
