General Motors faced the challenge of modernizing the in‑car experience for vehicles that lacked built‑in navigation—bringing one million model year 2018+ Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac cars up to a real‑time, cloud‑based navigation standard that updates over time, supports voice and app integration, and helps address EV range anxiety and safety alerts.
The solution, launched in April 2021 as Maps+, uses Mapbox Dash and Navigation SDK to deliver integrated navigation that updates in real time, enables voice‑initiated routing, favorite audio app integration, low‑fuel and speed‑limit alerts, and automatic charging‑station search when range is low. The update upgraded one million vehicles, improved the ownership experience for ICE and EV drivers, and exemplified GM’s digital transformation—driving growth, innovation, and faster time‑to‑market.
