A Mapbox Case Study
CNN, the 24-hour global news leader, needed to deliver fast, location-specific coverage of rapidly changing events—hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes and even major data releases like the 2020 Census—to inform and protect its audience. The challenge was publishing accurate, up-to-date maps and visualizations in minutes to support live reporting for its roughly 150 million readers.
Using Mapbox tools and Mapbox Studio as critical infrastructure, CNN quickly designs and publishes streaming maps, reuses and adapts existing wildfire and hurricane maps, and controls map features (land, water, roads) for clarity. The result: rapid, reliable location context in breaking coverage and a dot-density race and ethnicity map produced within hours of the 2020 Census release, improving how audiences see where news is unfolding.
