A Manual Case Study
The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) faced a challenge where it was primarily seen as a performance venue rather than an institution with a broader mission for civic engagement and social change. To address this, they partnered with the design firm Manual for a comprehensive rebranding effort that included a new brand identity, visual system, and verbal identity.
Manual's solution was to create a new, iconic logo and a flexible graphic system that positioned YBCA as an active cultural participant. This rebrand gave the organization a clearer and more vital public presence, successfully repositioning it as a central, vibrant cultural force in San Francisco. Manual continued to collaborate with YBCA for four years, extending the new identity to major annual events like the YBCA 100 summit.
