Case Study: Tatoeba achieves faster, more reliable search and improved site performance with Manticore Search

A Manticore Search Case Study

Preview of the Tatoeba Case Study

Tatoeba - large database of sentences and translations

Tatoeba is a volunteer-driven, open-source database of example sentences and translations that helps users see words in context. Facing memory constraints and frequent crashes with Sphinx that even broke their homepage, Tatoeba evaluated alternatives like Elasticsearch but avoided major rewrites and ultimately turned to Manticore Search to replace their aging search stack.

Manticore Search migrated Tatoeba from Sphinx, deploying a more reliable search daemon that no longer blocks and significantly improved search performance. The switch boosted overall site speed and stability for roughly 220K–280K searches per month (about 7.5–10K per day), resolving the outages caused by Sphinx and delivering a smoother user experience.
