Western Express Drives Fuel Costs Down with Fuel&Route

Western Express is a privately owned, truckload carrier with 3,300 power units and more than 8,000 trailers, founded in 1991 and headquartered in Nashville, TN. A Manhattan customer for over 12 years using Driver&Load® and Drop&Swap®, the carrier sought to further lower costs—fuel accounts for 21% of the operating cost of every mile driven—so they evaluated fuel-optimization solutions and deepened their partnership with Manhattan.

They implemented Fuel&Route® in Manhattan Carrier to reduce out-of-route miles and steer drivers to the lowest-cost fuel stops; the system escalates notifications at 25-50 miles and 50-75 miles off route, contacts drivers at 50 miles and 100 miles, and can send updated routes to get drivers back on track. In one year Western Express saved $1.5 million by lowering out-of-route miles by 1% (with a goal to cut another 1% and save an additional $1.5 million) and saved $51,000 by increasing refueling at assigned stations from 85% to 86%, targeting 90% compliance and roughly $250,000 in total diesel savings from the start.
