A Manhattan Associates Case Study
Giant Eagle, a top-40 private supermarket chain operating more than 460 stores across PA, OH, WV, MD and IN with six distribution centers and a 340-driver fleet, struggled with fragmented transportation technology and inconsistent store delivery schedules. Three siloed systems, decentralized routing and variable daily loads produced inefficiency, excess miles and higher costs.
By consolidating onto Manhattan TMS and centralizing routing—linking procurement and WMS and using dynamically static routing and cross-docks—Giant Eagle optimized inbound and outbound loads, maximized cube and filled capacity with backhauls. The implementation cut empty miles by 8%, total miles by 7.7%, improved cube by 7%, increased load utilization and lowered inbound costs while improving service levels.
