A Mambu Case Study
GIG CFI is a not‑for‑profit cooperative financial institution in Johannesburg serving around 1,000 previously underbanked members. Facing the common South African CFI challenges of manual systems, regulatory compliance burdens and limited scalability, GIG CFI needed to replace its legacy banking system with a flexible, cloud‑native platform — and in 2013 migrated to Mambu’s composable cloud banking platform (deployed on AWS) to address those gaps.
Using Mambu, GIG CFI quickly configured products like interest‑free loans secured by share‑based savings and P2P loan structures, enabled mobile access even over GPRS, and moved operations fully online. Mambu’s platform helped the cooperative provide modern banking at fair rates, build internal credit histories for members, reduce reliance on high‑cost lenders, support member businesses and solar installations, and gain recognition as the best performing CFI in South Africa while serving ~1,000 members.
