The US Department of Justice (DoJ) sought to investigate an Iranian disinformation network by analyzing its online infrastructure. The challenge was to uncover how the network operated and gauge the impact of seizing its domains. They used Maltego and its integration with WhoisXML API to conduct this analysis.

Maltego provided a solution by enabling the DoJ to start with seized domains and enrich them to visually map the entire campaign's infrastructure. This process allowed for a rapid retrieval and linking of digital artifacts like IP addresses and URLs. The result was a deeper understanding of how the disinformation was spread and the size of the network's online footprint, providing crucial evidence for the investigation.
