Open Source Centre maps North Korea’s illicit coal network with Maltego in 2 UN briefings

The Open Source Centre (OSC), a UK-based non-profit, investigates global illicit networks. Their challenge involved mapping the complex relationships behind North Korea’s illicit coal smuggling operations, which required connecting fragmented evidence from various sources like vessel tracking data and satellite imagery to understand the wider network. With support from the Maltego Grants Program, they used Maltego Graph for this investigation.

Maltego provided the solution by enabling OSC to import and connect various data points, such as vessel identifiers and corporate records, within its graph analytics platform. This allowed analysts to visualize relationships between entities and uncover hidden connections. The investigation led to OSC briefing the UN Security Council, and the findings contributed to a joint international statement calling for accountability, demonstrating a significant real-world impact from using Maltego.
