Microsoft cuts Surface Pro 10 carbon footprint by up to 28% with Makersite

Microsoft, a global technology company, faced the challenge of transforming its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology from a directional modeling process to a more accurate, supply chain-specific environmental impact accounting process. To achieve this and better identify hotspots for its electronic devices, Microsoft partnered with vendor Makersite to leverage its AI-powered product lifecycle intelligence software and automated LCA models.

The solution implemented by Makersite used artificial intelligence to automatically analyze bills of materials and supplier-provided full material declarations, modeling each component down to its chemical composition. This new methodology dramatically increased the percentage of the carbon footprint calculated from primary supplier data from 20% to over 70%. As a result, Microsoft reduced the carbon footprint of its Surface Pro 10 by up to 28% within two years, enabling more sustainable product design and supply chain decisions at scale.
