Building Robot Subs, Reinventing Stem Learning with Makerbot

Falcon Robotics, the award-winning high school team from Carl Hayden High School, faced the challenge of rapidly prototyping and iterating complex parts for autonomous underwater vehicles while giving students hands-on STEM experience. Before adopting in-house 3D printing they relied on slow, costly outsourced metal and print services that limited iteration, ownership, and learning — so the team integrated MakerBot 3D printers and software into their makerspace to speed development and teach real-world engineering skills.

Using multiple MakerBot printers and intuitive MakerBot print software, Falcon Robotics moved from weeks-long turnarounds to testing and refining parts in about a week, resolving issues like torpedo balance and launcher reliability much faster. MakerBot’s hardware and workflow shortened learning curves, increased student learning cycles and ownership, and enabled rapid fail-early prototyping that improved HABOOB’s design while mirroring professional R&D processes.
