University of Toronto launches FoodFlip with Make Digital and 15,000+ food items

The Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto initiated a project to develop an app to study public response to nutrition profiling. Their challenge was to leverage their large database of over 15,000 unique food items into a public-facing application that could provide clear nutritional information. They partnered with the vendor Make Digital for this project.

Make Digital developed the "FoodFlip" app for iOS and Android, which allowed users to scan a barcode or search to get a simple traffic light rating on a product's nutritional value. The solution was built on a centralized database, ensuring information could be updated without modifying the app. The app launched successfully in 2016, providing users with up-to-date nutritional information while supplying the university with important data for their ongoing research into improving the health of Canadians.
