Case Study: Napa Sanitation District achieves clean resilience and lower costs with Mainspring Energy's Linear Generator

Cost-savings, reduced emissions, and clean resilience for a large municipal wastewater facility in California

The Napa Sanitation District (NapaSan) faced the dual challenge of increasing the utilization of its wastewater treatment plant's anaerobic digesters and replacing an aging, on-site generator. They needed a clean, dispatchable power generation technology that could scale with their planned biogas expansion and provide cleaner backup power, reducing their reliance on diesel generators during grid outages. To meet these goals, they worked with Mainspring Energy.

Mainspring Energy implemented a 250kW Linear Generator at the facility, the first-ever at a wastewater plant to run on biogas from anaerobic digestion. The solution allows NapaSan to process more waste to produce additional biogas for power generation, lowering electricity costs and reducing NOx emissions. The project significantly enhanced the facility's sustainability and provided it with clean, low-emission resilience against power outages.
