How Ruby-Based DNSimple Uses Mailgun’s API To Create & Configure Domains For Email Forwarding

DNSimple, a Ruby-on-Rails domain management service, wanted to offer email forwarding without the overhead of running mail servers. Faced with the challenge of adding reliable, scalable forwarding for customers, they selected Mailgun for its clean API and easy integration.

Using HTTParty to call Mailgun’s API, DNSimple programmatically creates and configures domains (including MX and SPF records), sets up regex-based forwarding “routes,” stores route identifiers, and removes domains/routes on deletion. The result: a low-maintenance, billable per-domain forwarding feature with improved deliverability and no mail server operations to manage.
