SparkToro, a company focused on helping businesses identify their target audiences and the channels they use, needed a cost-effective, scalable email solution as it launched in 2018. The team wanted something technical enough for developer needs but flexible enough for marketing, without the high cost of a bundled enterprise-style platform.
SparkToro split its email traffic between marketing and transactional messages, using Mailgun for transactional email. With Mailgun’s free plan, CTO Casey Henry was able to build and test API calls early, then move to a paid plan that fit the startup’s budget. Mailgun also helped SparkToro manage engagement and suppression data through webhooks, allowing dynamic email volumes, better sender reputation, and campaign cuts when performance or sustainability lagged.
