Magnolia helps $7billion utility build its brand presence

Stadtwerke München (SWM) is one of Germany’s largest communal utilities—serving over one million customers with electricity, gas, water, heating, transport and telecom services and generating about $6.1 billion in annual revenue. Its web portal was a primary brand and customer channel but ran on an outdated proprietary CMS that was hard to customize, time-consuming to manage (requiring two full-time admins and lengthy author training), and failed to support modern, accessible, customer-focused design and features.

SWM relaunched its portal on Magnolia (Community, then Enterprise), integrating open-source flexibility with tools like the Google Web Toolkit and using Magnolia’s Standard Templating Kit, workflows and separate authoring instances for fast, collaborative development. The result is an attractive, easy-to-navigate site that improved customer engagement and communication, slashed training and admin costs, enabled quicker content publishing and consistent multi-site management, and helped shorten the sales cycle and expand sales opportunities.
