A Magnolia CMS Case Study
Melia, a Spanish hotel group with 384 hotels and 97,000 rooms operating across 40+ countries (with 70% of bookings coming from its own digital channels), faced a blocker to further digital growth: a custom, monolithic Java backend and proprietary CMS that limited speed, scalability and editorial autonomy. The company sought an open-source, cloud-friendly CMS that was easy to use across regions, flexible and extensible, fast to develop on, and supported integrations and vendor backing.
Melia selected Magnolia as the new CMS core, building a Melia Content Hub and deploying a cloud-ready, high-availability AWS infrastructure. Magnolia enabled editor autonomy, rapid template and landing-page creation, and easy REST integrations (Salesforce Marketing Cloud, DAM, e‑commerce, Jira flows), while decoupling front- and back-end. The project went live in March 2018; in one month 350 hotels and 500 users were trained, teams produced 40 landing pages in a week using 10 component-based templates, and time-to-market, scalability and publishing efficiency significantly improved.
