Securing Coppin State From Discovery to Masking in Peoplesoft Environments

Coppin State University, a member institution of the University System of Maryland, needed a better way to secure sensitive data in its PeopleSoft environments to satisfy auditor mandates, compliance requirements, and campus security concerns. The university faced the challenge of identifying where sensitive data lived, who could access it, and how to protect it in a way that was easy to maintain. Vendor Mage Data, through its MENTIS iDiscover and iMask products, was selected to address these application-level data security needs.

Mage Data implemented MENTIS to discover sensitive data items in PeopleSoft, define which pages should be masked, and apply masking rules based on role-based access. The team inventoried sensitive HCM data, selected 81 pages for masking, and used PeopleCode automation or manual updates to enforce protection; for example, SSNs, dates of birth, salaries, and bank account data were masked unless users had the appropriate MENTIS role. The result was stronger data security, clearer access control, and a practical framework Coppin State could expand to Campus Solutions and Financials.
