San Diego Gas & Electric cuts wildfire notification steps from 37 to 3 with Tandem

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) faced a critical challenge in overhauling its emergency notification process for Public Safety Power Shutoffs during wildfires. Their existing system was a precarious, 37-step manual workflow that depended on a single employee and could only send messages to 5,000 customers per batch. To meet new state regulations and serve its 3.7 million customers, SDG&E partnered with Tandem to modernize its platform.

Tandem extended SDG&E's existing Motorola VESTA platform by building a custom software solution featuring five microservices and eight legacy integrations, all deployed on-premise. The result reduced the notification process from 37 steps to just three clicks, increasing capacity to over 150,000 customers per activation. This overhaul had a measurable impact, allowing SDG&E to demonstrate compliance and avoid fines; a competitor was fined 417 times more for the same regulatory period.
