St. Clair College builds a 30-Mac mini virtual lab with MacStadium

St. Clair College, a public college in Ontario, faced a challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic forced classes online. Professor Darren Takaki needed to provide his students with remote access to a Mac environment for Xcode and Swift coursework, as the on-campus computer labs were no longer a viable option. The college partnered with vendor MacStadium to find a solution.

MacStadium implemented a solution using 30 dedicated, cloud-hosted Mac minis, providing students with remote desktop access. This allowed students to continue their coursework seamlessly from home with no loss in performance compared to the physical labs. The solution was so reliable it required minimal management from the professor, and MacStadium's support team quickly resolved any issues. The success of this remote lab also opened future possibilities for the college to offer courses to international students online.
