National Grid drastically reduces collisions and improves fleet safety with Lytx® technology

National Grid, the leading natural gas and electricity provider in the U.S. Northeast, deployed Lytx technology across its gas operations fleet of roughly 4,000 vehicles to tackle rising collisions, assign accountability, make driving data actionable, counter insurance fraud, and deliver recognition within complex union rules. The primary goal was to increase technicians’ awareness of unsafe driving habits and shift behavior toward safer driving without a punitive approach.

National Grid implemented the Lytx Driver Safety Program and Fleet Tracking, used video telematics and a custom API-driven safety dashboard, trained ~700 coaches in positive coaching, and even hosted Lytx experts on-site to embed best practices. The result: dramatic safety gains — a 94% reduction in collisions, 84% drop in avoidable near-collisions and an 83% reduction in event severity — plus ongoing year-over-year improvements (e.g., a 24% collision decrease and major reductions in unsafe following distance and cell-phone use), fewer fraudulent claims, and a stronger safety culture.
