A Lytx Case Study
Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) manages a large, diverse fleet (about 1,200 employees) operating heavy equipment in one of the nation’s busiest regions. Facing persistent risky driving behaviors—following too closely, not looking ahead, cell-phone use, seatbelt violations—and initial employee and union concerns about privacy and trust, DPWES needed a solution to strengthen its safety culture and reduce accidents and public complaints.
DPWES deployed the Lytx DriveCam program, with leaders modeling use, a coaching‑not‑punitive approach, union engagement, rewards/competitions, and analytics-driven coaching and fleet tracking. In one year the program cut frequency of risky events 66% and severity 67%, improved seatbelt use 70%, reduced following too close 63%, cell‑phone use 52% and traffic violations 74%; citizen complaints stopped, claims fell, and the program has expanded to additional divisions with nearly 400 units installed.
